Empowerment Through Food Justice

                   Empowerment Through Food Justice

A Black History Month Presentation By Vivian Etuka

On February 24, 2025, BOC Services delivered a presentation on Addressing Racism, Oppression, and Food Insecurity in Black Communities. This event was part of the ongoing Black History Month series organized by Second Harvest, a nationwide initiative focused on food justice and empowering Black communities.

Led by Vivian Etuka, the founder of Bethel Outreach Community Services, the presentation highlighted the systemic barriers Black Canadians face in accessing nutritious, culturally appropriate food. Key discussions included:
The historical and structural causes of food insecurity
The impact of racism and economic inequality on Black food access
The importance of Black Food Sovereignty and community-led solutions
Policy recommendations for creating long-term food justice

A major highlight was the call to action, urging community members, policymakers, and organizations to support Black-led food programs, invest in Black Farmers and Farmers Market, and advocate for equitable food policies.

As we continue the fight for food justice, we encourage you to learn more, get involved, and take action. Together, we can ensure every Black Canadian has access to healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food. You can read the presentation Here –
